What is The 39 Steps about?
Directed by Damien Ryan, the story follows Richard Hannay, who has found himself framed for murder. Across 100 minutes of non-stop action, Hannay must outrun the law, outwit international agents and survive a series of absurd adventures. This is a super fast-paced whirlwind of spies, secrets and crazy adventures resulting in a comedy-thriller that will leave you trying to catch your breath from laughter.
Who is in The 39 Steps?
There are four actors in the play, but here’s the catch – together, they play 130 roles. Expect some crazy quick changes, inventive stagecraft and super high-energy as the cast navigates this huge array of different characters throughout the play. The roles are played by some of Australia’s most beloved talents, Lisa McCune (Blue Heelers, Sea Patrol, The King And I), Ian Stenlake (Sea Patrol, Stingers) and David Collins and Shane Dundas (The Umbilical Brothers).

Will The 39 Steps play anywhere else in Australia?
The show is currently showing at the Comedy Theatre in Melbourne and will end October 4, 2025. If those dates don’t work for you, there is another option! If you feel like taking a little holiday in Brisbane, The 39 Steps will play at QPAC Playhouse from October 7-19, 2025. After that though, there are no further Australian dates planned at this stage. Trust us, you don’t want to miss out on securing a seat at this laugh-out-loud show.
