A new, world premiere exhibition is now open at ACMI and it’s set to change the way that you think about the future. The Future & Other Fictions features over 180 works from 19 creative visionaries from around the world. Explore how futures are imagined across film, videogames and screen-based art with sets, props, scripts, costumes and more. The Future & Other Fictions is on display at ACMI from now until April 27, 2025.
The Future & Other Fictions at ACMI
Wander through the exhibition and see costumes from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Björk’s mesmerising music video The Gate. There will also be miniature sets from Blade Runner 2049 as well as concept art from Cyberpunk 2077 and The Creator. You’ll also find original sketches from the futuristic First Nations comic series, NEOMAD.
Encounter new possibilities with Afrofuturistic works from Olalekan Jeyifous and fashion activism from Tāgata Moana art collective Pacific Sisters.
The exhibition will also feature new commissions. Encounter a planet that is yet to experience its first sunrise from Queensland-based artist Hannah Brontë. Then, see Liam Young and Natasha Wanganeen reimagine a world in which fossil fuel production has ceased.
Additional programming
On top of the exhibition, there will also be a special film season at ACMI Cinemas from November 28 to December 16. This program will focus on Björk and her many talents as musician, actor and artistic collaborator. See her acting debut in The Juniper Tree, her award-winning role in Dancer in the Dark and more.
Experience what it’s like to make your own sci-fi film by playing the free and text-based choose-your-adventure game, INT. SPACESHIP – NIGHT. This multiple-choice game will put you at the wrister’s table and draw inspiration from ACMI’s exhibitions. It’s available to play until April 27.
There will also be talks, screenings and symposiums during the summer period. To see what’s coming up, click here.
