Gain a deeper understanding of the natural world and our place within it when London-based experimental art collective, Marshmallow Laser Feast (MLF) comes to ACMI. In this dreamy experience, you’ll see five major digital artworks on an awe-inspiring scale. Evolve from droplets of water into ancient trees. Journey from tiny cells to fearsome black holes, and feel a connection to the world around you in this immersive experience. Marshmallow Laser Feast: Works of Nature will make its world premiere in ACMI from November 23 to April 14 next year.
Marshmallow Laser Feast: Works of Nature at ACMI
This will be the first major exhibition in Australia from Marshmallow Laser Feast. They’ve dazzled audiences around the world with immersive creative technology, in places like Sundance Film Festival, Istanbul Design Biennial and more.
This new exhibition at ACMI will capture your imagination and spark a sense of wonder. It will feature artworks executive produced by filmmaker Terrence Malick. It will also have collaborations featuring narration by Cate Blanchett and poetry by Daisy Lafarge. As for music, feel swept away with sounds from Jonny Greenwood, Jon Hopkins, Meredith Monk, Jóhann Jóhannsson and Howard Skempton.
“This exhibition reflects the power of large-scale moving image works and creative use of projection technologies to produce immersive experiences that demonstrate how our bodies and the natural world are so intrinsically connected,” said ACMI Director and CEO Seb Chan. “Works of Nature is an unforgettable experience that can inspire us to work towards a better future.”
There’s five works for you to look forward to.
1. Sanctuary of the Unseen Forest
Enter the gallery and feel amazed by this large-scale video installation of an Amazonian kapok tree. This piece draws attention to the sheer size of our natural world, and will put the human body into perspective.
2. Evolver
In this meditative experience, you’ll follow the follow of oxygen through the body to its origin as a single living cell. This piece includes a meditation space with narration from Cate Blanchett, as well as a hypnotic sequence that connects the birth of a cell with the cosmos.
3. Distortions in Spacetime
In this interactive journey, you’ll voyage through space to the edge of a black hole. This experience explores the link between black holes, dying stars and the human body.
4. The Tides Within Us
Six large scale static images will reveal the rhythms of oxygen flowing through the body. This piece challenges the boundaries between humans and the environment, and where the body begins and ends.
5. We Live in an Ocean of Air
Come back to earth and continue the journey of a single breath. This final piece reveals the connection between plants and people.
This exhibition will take over Gallery 4 in ACMI from November 23, 2023 to April 14, 2024. Tickets go on sale to the general public on November 9.
