For those of you into “mergers and acquisitions”, Patrick Bateman is sharpening his axe once again. Following a sell-out Melbourne season in 2025, American Psycho—The Musical will return to Chapel Off Chapel this October before making its Brisbane debut in 2027.
A dark musical with a killer soundtrack
Based on Bret Easton Ellis’ controversial novel, the stage adaptation plunges audiences into the glossy, excess-filled world of late-1980s Manhattan. By day, Patrick Bateman is a wealthy investment banker obsessed with designer labels and status. By night, Bateman’s carefully crafted image begins to unravel.
The musical skewers capitalism, consumerism and toxic ambition through a darkly satirical lens, pairing its psychological horror with a score by Grammy and Tony Award winner Duncan Sheik (Spring Awakening) and hits from Phil Collins, Tears for Fears, New Order and Huey Lewis and the News.

Conor Beaumont returns as Patrick Bateman following his acclaimed 2025 performance, alongside a cast of Australian musical theatre talent including Mia Dabkowski-Chandler, Montana Sharp, Harley Dasey and Jake Ameduri, with Alexandra Cashmere, Nelana Ferguson and Bash Nelson also joining the company.
Director Mark Taylor says audiences embraced the production beyond expectations when it premiered last year. “We can’t wait to bring American Psycho back to Australia this year. Our 2025 premiere defied all our expectations, with people coming from all corners of the country to witness the production.”
Reflecting on the show’s modern relevance, Taylor says: “With the world events currently playing out around us, the American Psycho story – where Donald Trump is Patrick Bateman’s idol—feels more eerily relevant than ever. Applying a 2026 lens to the show, we’re holding up a mirror to our audience and the warped idea of what status, success and masculinity should look like.”
The production features a book by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (of Riverdale) alongside Duncan Sheik’s music and lyrics, bringing Ellis’ cult novel to the stage with a mix of satire, horror and pop music.
