Champagne is the most prestigious sparkling wine in the world. Produced from only three grape varieties (chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier) and grown in the chalky soils of France’s most northerly wine region, no other sparkling wine may take its name. And, it’s always spelled with a capital C to distinguish its importance.
On the fourth Friday of October, Champagne is celebrated for being Champagne and Melbourne’s Appartement 26—the Parisian Salon decorated with French antiques dating from the 17th-19th Century—is raising more than one glass of the good stuff in its honour.
Celebrate Champagne Day in Melbourne on Friday 28 October.
Your hosts at Appartement 26 on Champagne Day are going to pop open at least four bottles of Champagne thanks to Pommery—a Champagne House from Reims that was the first to pioneer the brut style of Champagne. Two Brut Champagnes, Apanage and Rose, will be bubbling away as well as Grand Cru 2009 and a Cuvée Louise 2004, which just so happens to be the most refined vintage of the grand crus.
However, your savouring of Champagne will be elevated to a whole other level when paired with the delectable French sharing menu that you hosts will have whipped up in the kitchen. From the starters to the cheese and charcuterie boards as well as the main dishes, your mouth will be watering for more. Take a look at the full menu here.
