Ballarat is about to spend four days fully in character. From 21st to 24th May, the city’s annual heritage festival returns with a new focus on “Hidden Histories”, turning the gold rush city into a lively, city-wide showcase of stories, spaces and characters that helped shape its past.
For Melburnians after an easy weekend escape, the festival is pitching itself as more than a nostalgia trip. The 2026 program mixes serious historical storytelling with the kind of crowd-pleasers Ballarat does best, including heritage train rides, horse and carriage tours, antique hunting, after-dark museum sessions, distillery deep dives and the return of the always entertaining beard competition.
The Tale Behind The Festival

At the centre of this year’s program is Ballarat Revealed: Hidden Histories, Shared Together, a free exhibition at the Ballarat Mining Exchange that brings together stories from across the city’s past and present. The display includes a large-scale replica of the 1901 Chinese Arch, a striking nod to the Chinese communities who played a major role on the goldfields.
A dedicated First Nations space will also share stories of Country and culture from the Wadawurrung people, while Little Figures, Long Shadows recognises ten LGBTIQA+ figures connected to Ballarat through 3D-printed busts.
The broader festival theme reflects a deliberate shift toward the lesser-known people and histories that sit beneath the city’s better-known heritage streetscapes.
What’s On At The Ballarat Heritage Fest?

Several of the festival’s biggest drawcards are back for 2026. Heritage fans can book steam train rides with Steamrail Victoria, including shuttle services to Yendon, while those who prefer a slower pace can take in Ballarat’s historic precinct by horse and carriage.
The Ballarat Antiques Fair returns to the Civic Hall with 28 dealers from five states, and Camp Street will host a vintage car display spanning more than 120 years of automotive history.
The festival also leans into its more playful side. Hop Temple will host the 10th annual Ballarat Beard and Stache Competition on 23rd May, followed by the Dog Beard and Stache Competition the next day.
There’s also a strong food and drink line-up, with Heritage Harvest Weekend at Sovereign Hill bringing together local producers, live cooking demonstrations and appearances from Alice Zaslavsky, Tim Bone and Kara Monssen.
Why This Heritage Matters

The 2026 edition appears designed to broaden the festival’s lens to champion heritage landmarks. By placing Chinese heritage, Wadawurrung stories and local LGBTIQA+ histories alongside the familiar steam engines and antique fairs, the program gives the city’s past a more layered, contemporary reading.
City of Ballarat has said the new format is aimed at making the event more concentrated and accessible, while still offering the mix of exhibitions, tours and hands-on experiences that have made the festival a fixture on the local calendar.
