The regional city of Ballarat has a rich and golden history. From gorgeous architecture to spooky stories, there’s a lot to discover in this fascinating town. Explore the different eras of its past at the vibrant community event, Ballarat Heritage Festival. It will run over ten days, from Friday May 19 to Sunday May 28.
Ballarat Heritage Festival
This festival first began in 2006, and has since grown into a marvellous tourist attraction. Find everything from cyclists in tweed to old gaol tours. Watch incredible performances, explore exhibitions, find antiques, taste delicious food, take part in workshops and much, much more.
Highlights include:
1. Craft Lab 23
When: May 20, 21, 27 and 28 from 10am to 5pm
Where: Ballarat Mining Exchange
Over four days, 17 curated practitioners from around Ballarat will share their knowledge and showcase some of the best locally produced craft and design items. There will be opportunities to take part in talks, demonstrations and workshops, so that you can make your own creation. Entry is free, with some experiences bookable online.
2. The Great Takeaway
When: Thursday May 25
Where: Ballarat Mining Exchange
This Australian-first event will have you dining among some of the finest materials, textiles, glassware and ceramics produced in the region. After your three-course meal, with drinks and entertainment, you’ll get to take the handcrafted materials home. This experience fits 60 guests, and tickets cost $275.
3. Candlelight Concerts
When: Friday May 26 from 7:30pm
Where: Ballarat Civic Hall
The mesmerising Candlelight Concerts are taking over Ballarat for the first time. Listen to an orchestra dazzle the audience with scores from Hans Zimmer, John Williams and more. Book your tickets here.
4. Ballarat Antique Fair
When: Friday May 19 to Sunday May 21
Where: Ballarat Civic Hall
Visit this classic art deco building and discover heirlooms, period pieces and more from over 26 antique dealers. You’ll find things like jewellery, furniture, artwork and ceramics. Tickets cost $10 to $15.
5. Ballarat Tweed Ride
When: Saturday May 20 from 10am to 12pm
Where: Departs from Pipers by the Lake, Lake Wendouree
Take part in this famous Tweed Ride, and journey through the picturesque streets of Ballarat in vintage and heritage-inspired outfits. Think tweed, velvet, capes, kilts and more.
6. Old Gaol Tours
When: Friday May 19 to Sunday May 21, from 9am to 5:30pm
Where: Federation University SMB Campus
Learn the criminal history of Ballarat’s former Gaol through storytelling, ancient artefacts, old blueprints and photos. Explore the grounds and discover the original tunnels through a virtual reality experience. Tickets are free, but bookings are essential.
