Make some memories in the vintage photobooth on Flinders Street

Tourists and locals alike are welcome to pop into the vintage photobooth at Flinders Street and snap some happy memories. This beloved landmark has been in operation for over 65 years. For 50 of them, it was lovingly maintained by Alan Adler, who passed away in late 2024. Now, the space is carefully looked after by the team at Metro Auto Photo. Slip into the booth, and take some delightful black and white photos. The space uses traditional wet-lab chemical processing on light sensitive paper, so your strip will be ready in about three minutes as it develops. Photos are $8, but you’ll need to go old-school, and pay with gold coins. It’s open 24 hours a day. For more photobooths around Melbourne, click here.
Pause and listen to Waltzing Matilda from the clock in Melbourne Central

You’re riding the escalator up to the ground floor, after getting off the train at Melbourne Central, when suddenly, you hear it. The familiar chimes of Waltzing Matilda. Playing every hour, this cheerful tune sings out from the giant golden pocketwatch, while cockatoos and galahs dance along. Join the small crowd of surprised tourists, and soak in this moment of delightful whimsy.
View the city at sunset from Point Ormond in Elwood

Melbourne has plenty of lovely lookouts if you’re keen for a view of the city, but there’s something about Point Ormond in Elwood that just feels special. Wander up the hill, and take in panoramic views of Melbourne and Port Phillip Bay. Sit on the grass, feel the breeze and watch as joggers, cyclists and dogwalkers pass you by. Stay for golden hour, and watch as the landscape becomes drenched in the warm glow of sunset. There’s also a playground nearby, which makes this a great option for the whole family.
Go for a bike ride along Merri Creek Trail and stop for a bite at CERES Merri Cafe

If you’d like to enjoy a bit of nature, without straying too far away from Melbourne, why don’t you meander along the Merri Creek Trail? Starting at Dights Falls, and ending in Reservoir, this 21km shared pathway follows Merri Creek into Melbourne’s northern suburbs. It’s a nice flat path that’s suitable for walkers and cyclists, and passes notable spots like Coburg Lake Reserve and Brunswick Velodome. You can go for just a short distance, or challenge yourself and try the whole thing. But, if you wanted an area to focus on, stick to the spots around CERES in Brunswick. After riding your bike on the trail, stop and explore this 4.5 hectare park. Grab a cup of coffee from Merri Cafe, and keep your energy up with sandwiches, wraps, salads, cakes and baked goods. The cafe is open daily from 8:30am to 3pm, so plan accordingly. Merri Creek Trail is also close to public transport, so you don’t have to worry about the return journey. See the map here.
