Dating back over 3,000 years, the Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most important holidays in the Chinese cultural calendar. The festival, which is held on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese lunisolar calendar, has its foundations in the legend of Chang’e, the Moon Goddess, and sees lanterns of all sizes displayed as a symbolic path to prosperity and good fortune.
In their place, hundreds of candles will shine bring at the Athenaeum Theatre on September 9 September to welcome Elective Strings (quartet) as well as guzheng and konghou musicians Yatong Wei and Zixi (Dianna) Song, and singer Xi Chen to perform.

The heritage-listed Athenaeum Theatre will be lit up with the glow of so many candles that light will be flickering and dancing off of the walls as the talented musicians take to their instruments. Eclective Strings are no strangers to performing Candlelight concerts with previous performances including Vivaldi’s Four Seasons as well as Queen, The Beatles and lighting up Fed Square for a special Valentine’s Day concert.
Joined on traditional instruments by Yatong Wei and Dianna Song, award-winning musicians and teachers at the Australian Dunhuang Arts Academy, and singer Xi Chen, the performance is bound to sparkle and enchant audiences.
