Melbourne’s oldest cultural institution, The Athenaeum, is hosting a special live music tribute with only one date for this year. On November 21, the gilded old room swaps its theatrical productions for something very different: Candlelight: Best of Cantonese Pop.
Expect songs from artists like Eason Chan, a Cantopop giant who has released more than 40 albums and won the Jade Solid Gold Ultimate Male Singer Gold award ten times. It’s a fitting match for a city where Chinese heritage runs deep.

The setlist honors Cantopop legends like Eason Chan, Jay Chou and Nicholas Tse. It’s a beautiful tribute for a city with deep Chinese roots, tracing back to the 1850s gold rush and represented today by over 34,000 residents of Chinese ancestry.

The Athenaeum Theatre
The theatre boasts some serious cinematic pedigree. The Athenaeum’s screens first flickered to life in October 1896, and just ten years later, it hosted the premiere of The Story of the Kelly Gang—widely considered the world’s first multi-reel, feature-length narrative film.
The 880-seat, three-tier theatre you walk into today was rebuilt in 1924, perfectly setting the stage for yet another milestone: in 1929, it became one of the first spots in Australia to screen a “talkie” with The Jazz Singer.
Today the Melbourne landmark boasts two theatres, commonly referred to as Athenaeum 1 and 2, with the latter being a 320-seat performance space located upstairs. The concert will take place inside Athenaeum Theatre 2.
