If gathering for a spring garden picnic, while listening to some grand classical music, is your idea of a good time, then you’re in luck. Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s community-focused initiative, MSO+, has teamed up with Abbotsford Convent to present Convent Sounds, a series of relaxed daytime concerts. Settle in on the sprawling heritage lawn, and lose yourself in the music on Sunday, October 25 and Sunday, December 6.
Convent Sounds
Wander over to this historic arts precinct, just 4km away from Melbourne CBD, and have a pleasant day out. This new concert series has been designed to make live orchestral music an affordable and easy experience, with free entry for kids, and just $20 tickets for adults.

For the first concert, look forward to an 11-piece brass ensemble, with musicians from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) and the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM). This particular performance is particularly special, because Abbotsford Convent is home to ANAM. Listen to Baroque masterpieces, Prokofiev’s epic interpretation of Romeo and Juliet, and grand movie moments from John Williams, including Star Wars, Harry Potter and Jurassic Park.
Then, in December, return for an end-of-year celebration with a festive community singalong.
For both concerts, you’re welcome to bring along your own picnic to enjoy in the gardens. Food and drink will also be available to purchase on the day. You can also pre-order a box of sweet treats, such as brownies and tarts, a picnic platter with little sandwiches, or a grazing platter with charcuterie, while you make your booking.
When you’re not listening to the music, explore the heritage-listed formal garden, which dates back to around 1902. Admire towering oak trees, take in sweeping vistas, then linger a little longer to explore the rest of the precinct.
