It might be winter, but we can already feel the promise of spring. Soon, the canola fields will bloom, and vast paddocks around Victoria will transform into a vivid sea of yellow. And while the state is filled with these bright yellow flowers, taking pictures can be a little tricky, because they’re located on private farms. Thankfully, there is one place in Victoria where you can really immerse yourself in the golden blooms. Take a day trip to the Heathcote region and wander through the fields at Shiraz Republic and Cornella Brewery. They’ve created a Cornella Canola Walk, a special track and viewing platform set within their 100 acre fields. The walk will open to the public on Friday, July 24, and run until Sunday, September 27.
Cornella Canola Walk
Walk along 2.5 kilometres of trails and experience 360 degrees of cheerful yellow flowers. As you go, you’ll find little corners that are perfect for photos, such as a grand piano in the paddock or a vintage tractor. Bring a camera along and snap all the pictures you need, or fly a drone over the vast fields. The trail will lead to a special viewing platform, so you can soak in all the vibrant colours.
As it is a working farm, remember to stay on the track and wear sensible shoes. Prams are fine on the track, and dogs are welcome to come too, as long as they are on a leash.
After you’ve journeyed along the trail, pop into the cellar door at Shiraz Republic. Sip on a glass of wine, try craft beer from Cornella Brewery and feast on woodfired pizza while overlooking the vines. There will also be food trucks and a pop-up bar on-site.
On the weekends, there will be live music to set the scene.
The fields are roughly a two hour drive from Melbourne, and is perfect for day trips and weekend getaways. It’s not too far from Bendigo and Heathcote, so there’s lots to explore if you decide to stay in the area.
