Looking for a totally unique cinema experience? Melbourne Planetarium at Scienceworks is throwing their annual Dome Under Film Festival. Back for its third year, this festival showcases a selection of fulldome format films handpicked from around the world. It’s the only film festival of its kind in Australia. Immerse yourself in the sheer scope of a fulldome film, which spans the entirety of the planetarium’s 16-metre domed ceiling. This hemispherical view, complete with surround sound, is unique to planetariums. Enjoy a weekend of back-to-back films from Saturday February 4 to Sunday February 5.
Dome Under
The planetarium in Melbourne’s west provides an all-encompassing experience that will leave you star-struck. It features a full dome video projection system, a 16m domed ceiling, reclining seats and a surround sound system. Immerse yourself in a world of colour and movement at the upcoming Dome Under Film Festival.
The program features 25 films from 14 countries, spanning across a vast range of genres. There’s seven themed sessions to choose from – Astronomy, Mind Blowing Art, Animation, World Stories, Art Meets Science, Families and Kids Films.
“We put a call out to filmmakers across the globe to submit fulldome format films that surprise, delight, confront and thrill audiences,” said Warik Lawrance, Founder and Curator of the Dome Under Film Festival. “We’re confident that our selection will do just that!”
On the last day of the festival, the film selection panel will present awards for Best Astronomy Film, Best Children’s Film, Best Narrative Film, Best Art Film and Best Sort Film. These films will then be submitted for the international Best of Earth Awards, which honour excellence, creativity and innovation in fulldome media.
Dome Under is a part of the International Cooperation of Fulldome Festivals (ICFF). The ICFF was formed in 2021, and includes Jena Fulldome Festival (Jena, Germany), Fulldome UK (Plymouth, England) and Dome Fest West (Los Angeles, USA).
