Just last month, a herd of nine elephants made the massive move from Melbourne Zoo to Werribee Open Range Zoo. And after taking a few weeks to settle into and explore their 21-hectare home, the brand-new Elephant Trail is now open for visitors. This wild new experience in Melbourne’s west has been years in the making, and has now opened just in time for the Easter school holidays.
Elephant Trail at Werribee Open Range Zoo
The Asian Elephants have plenty of room to wander about and explore, as their new habitat is the size of the entire Melbourne Zoo! See them up close as you meander down the walking trail, which connects the open space for the elephants with barns, mega pools and even a cafe.
Grab a bite to eat and a coffee from the Waterhole Cafe, and look out over the pools from the terrace. The elephants have two mega pools for them to splash about in.
Journey underneath the Elephant Overpass, then check out the Elephant Barn, where you’ll learn all about how the herd uses the space. Throughout the day, there will be different keeper talks to help you learn more about these majestic creatures.
The new home for the elephants was made possible by an $88 million investment from the Victorian Government.
Ready to stomp over and check it all out? Kids under 16 have free entry every weekend and public holiday, as well as the school holidays.
