“Son of a nutcracker!” Buddy the Elf’s most glorious catchphrase is about to ring out across Melbourne, with Elf The Musical officially landing at the brand-new Crown Live theatre from November 2026.
For Christmas lovers, the festive season is arriving early in Melbourne. Following its smash-hit Australian premiere season at the Sydney Opera House in 2024, the Broadway musical is heading south with a sleigh-load of holiday magic, oversized production numbers and enough Christmas cheer to thaw even the most committed festive grinch.
Buddy the Elf is leaving the North Pole for Melbourne

Based on the beloved Christmas film starring Will Ferrell, Elf The Musical brings Buddy’s story to the stage—an orphan who accidentally crawls into Santa’s sack of toys on Christmas Eve and finds himself whisked away to the North Pole.
His search for his real family takes him from the North Pole to New York City, where he must reconnect with a father who has landed himself on Santa’s naughty list, win over a half-brother who refuses to believe in Christmas magic and prove that a little holiday wonder can go a long way.
The show’s book comes from Tony Award winners Thomas Meehan (Annie, The Producers, Hairspray) and Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone), bringing Buddy’s big-hearted adventure from screen to stage.
Crown Live gets a festive opening act

Meanwhile, Melbourne’s production will be directed by Eric Giancola, with choreography by Mitchell Woodcock and music direction by Vicky Jacobs. Gareth Isaac will reprise his role as Buddy the Elf after winning rave reviews for his Australian debut, with more cast announcements expected in the coming months.
Also, the full-scale Broadway musical features songs by Tony Award nominees Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin, the songwriting team behind Disney’s Aladdin and The Wedding Singer.
The production will officially open the doors of the new Crown Live theatre, promising a bigger and brighter celebration of Christmas theatre, with the ability to hold over 1500 people.

Moreover, Producer John Frost AM is bringing Buddy’s journey back to Australian audiences with “spectacular staging, larger-than-life production numbers and plenty of Christmas surprises”.
Regardless of whether you are the type who starts decorating the moment November arrives or someone who needs a theatrical intervention before embracing the Christmas spirit, Buddy is ready to bring the presents straight to Melbourne.
