Melbourne is preparing for a sporting spectacle of a very different kind, with extra trains, trams and overnight buses rolling out to help fans get to the MCG for Australia’s first-ever NFL game.
The Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers will meet at the MCG on Friday, 11th September, with a sold-out crowd expected to pack the stadium for the 10.35am kick-off.
Fans from more than 35 countries have snapped up tickets, with almost half of the crowd expected to travel from interstate or overseas.
For those heading to the game, public transport will be the easiest way to navigate the crowds—and half-price fares will make the trip cheaper, too.
Extra services will run through the night

Metro will run trains throughout Thursday night and into Friday morning, giving early-rising fans and night-shift workers a way to reach the city before the game.
Extra trains and trams will arrive at the MCG every few minutes on Friday morning, while buses will run between the city and the stadium from 12.15am to 5am.
“Public transport is the smartest way to get to the ‘G for one of the biggest events on Victoria’s sporting calendar,” said Minister for Public Transport Vicki Ward. “We’re putting on extra services and offering half-price fares so fans can focus on the touchdowns, not how they’re getting home.”
The transport boost will continue after the final whistle, with additional train services—including V/Line services—running in the early afternoon to help fans leave Melbourne after the game.
Passengers travelling on the Werribee, Laverton and Williamstown lines can also head directly to Richmond Station by taking a Sandringham-bound train.
NFL fever will take over Melbourne

The MCG is only one part of the NFL action taking place across the city during game week. Fans without tickets can soak up the atmosphere at Melbourne End Zone at Fed Square, where live NFL games will screen on the Big Screen alongside free entertainment and activations. The NFL Kickoff Festival at Melbourne Park will also bring more free events and activities to the city.
With thousands of visitors descending on Melbourne and a bumper crowd expected at the MCG, fans should arrive early and plan their journey before setting off.
The historic game will draw fans beyond the stadium and into Melbourne’s hotels, restaurants and local businesses.
“From the MCG to our hotels, restaurants and local businesses, this history-making game will deliver a major boost for Victoria—and public transport will help fans get right into the action,” said Minister for Major Events Anthony Carbines.
