Garden State Hotel has had a major refresh, ten years after it first opened on Flinders Lane. Building on its original concept of a multi-level garden, and inspired by Victoria’s title as “The Garden State”, this venue now has a two-tiered Rooftop Garden, as well an after-dark space filled with the sounds of vinyl DJs.

The new two-level rooftop can fit 300 guests total, with plenty of layered planting, upholstered banquettes and garden-inspired finishes. It features an open-air lower terrace and a raised mezzanine, seating up to 40 guests, connected by green stairs. Climbing greenery links the rooftop back to the main bar below. Importantly, there’s a retractable roof and heating, so you can visit the rooftop all year round.
“Melburnians love a good rooftop, so we’re excited to bring this new elevated space to Garden State just in time for spring warming up,” said venue manager Katie Saxton. “It’s a unique setting on Flinders Lane, with its own personality, while still feeling completely at home within Garden State.”
Meanwhile, The Observatory is a new space at the venue, with plush booths and vinyl DJs spinning disco, funk and soul. Graze on bar snacks, and sip on spring cocktails, such as a Rhubarb & Pomegranate Spritz, Matcha Martini or a Pineapple & Mint Mule. This season, Garden State has also partnered with Chandon, with an exclusive Peach in the Garden Spritz with Chandon, vodka, peach, lemon and rosemary.

As for food, find plenty of rooftop plates, such as:
- Prawn rolls with dill mayo and lemon
- Stracciatella with cucumber, honey, black pepper and focaccia
- Truffle arancini with black garlic aioli and parmeson
- Kingfish crudo with parsley, chilli and lemon
- Sydney Rock oysters with caviar and limoncello vinaigrette
- Flatbread with olives, walnut romesco, honey labneh and spiced seeds
The rooftop is open daily from 12pm until late, while The Observatory is open to walk-ins only from Wednesday to Saturday, 4pm until late.
These new areas sit alongside the main bar and beer garden, Rose Garden basement bar, Tippy Tay and private function spaces of Garden State Hotel, offering plenty of different choices and vibes for your next visit.
