Football fever has probably never been more palpable in Australia than it is right now, and a brand-new event coming to Melbourne this May is set to add more fuel to our sports-mad city’s love of the beautiful game.
Global Football Week will see some of the very best teams and players in the world take over the MCG and Marvel Stadium for two massive nights of football headlined by an in-form Tottenham Hotspur, coached by Melbourne’s own Ange Postecoglou, Newcastle United, and the Matildas-stacked Arsenal Women.
Global Football Week, Melbourne
The three-game exhibition series will kick off at the MCG on Wednesday, May 22, with the two men’s Premier League sides battling it out in what promises to be a spirited friendly. It’ll also be the first time that decorated coach Ange Postecoglou has led his Spurs on to the pitch in his hometown, so even for neutrals this will be one not to miss.
On Friday, May 24, you can head to Marvel Stadium for an epic double-header. First up, Newcastle will take on the A-League All Stars Men’s side, before the Arsenal Women face off against the A-League All Stars Women’s team. This is a historic match-up for a number of reasons: it’ll be the first time that a women’s A-League All Stars squad has been formed, and it’s also the first time that the Arsenal Women will have played in Australia. And while we’re still awaiting details about who might feature in the All Star lineups, the travelling Gunners team will feature a few familiar faces, namely Matildas legends Kyra Cooney-Cross (pictured below), Steph Catley, and Caitlin Foord.
Tickets for all three matches go on sale later this month, with a pre-sale for A-League club members going live on Wednesday, March 27 at 2pm, with the general release happening from midday on Thursday, March 28. You can join the waitlist at the TEG website.
