After a record-breaking season in London, Groundhog Day The Musical is making its Australian premiere, right here in Melbourne. This reinterpretation of the hilarious 1993 film, Groundhog Day, is led by Australian singer-songwriter Tim Minchin. Follow Phil Connors, a Pittsburgh TV weatherman who is sent to cover the annual Groundhog Day event in a small Pennsylvanian town. He becomes trapped in a time loop, and is forced to relieve the day over and over again. Will he figure out how to break the cycle? This adaptation will play at the Princess Theatre from January 24, 2024.
Groundhog Day The Musical
Melbourne be the third city in the world to stage this production, after playing in London and for six months on Broadway. The critically acclaimed show was nominated for eight Olivier Awards, and won Best New Musical and Best Actor in a Leading Role.
“I have waited seven years for this moment!” said Tim Minchin AM, composer and lyricist for the musical. “Groundhog Day The Musical, like Matilda The Musical, has a unique mixture of darkness and light, of head and heart, and of complexity and joy, and I’ve been convinced since its first iteration that Australians will love it!
The musical will play exclusively in Melbourne for a limited season.
“I’m so excited that the run is going to be in Melbourne, the city I lived in when I wrote my break-out comedy shows, and the place where – when things weren’t going so well – I learned how important it is to find the beauty and hope in the day to day,” Minchin added.
This musical is directed by Matthew Warchus, with choreography from Peter Darling and set and costume design by Rob Howell. All three of them also worked with Minchin on Matilda The Musical. The book is by Danny Rubin, who was also the writer for the 1993 film.
