Heide Museum of Modern Art
This is the first museum exhibition in Australia featuring the work of renowned artist Bruce Munro. This English-Australian artist is best known for his immersive, light-based installations, including the iconic Field of Light experience in Uluru.
“Heide is delighted to bring the work of Bruce Munro to Melbourne for the first time,” said Lesley Harding, Heide Museum of Modern Art Director. “The beauty of the natural world, the complexity of the human condition, and the vastness of the cosmos are all brought to bear in an exhibition that is at once playful, contemplative and thought-provoking, offering an unforgettable interactive experience to engage the senses and enrich the mind.”
Bruce Munro: From Sunrise Road
The outdoor installation, Candent Spring, draws inspiration from his famous work, Field of Light. At the centre of Candent Spring is an arrangement of abstract clock faces, stainless steel waterlilies and patterns symbolising past, present, future, infinity and the speed of light. During the day, the beaming dome, known as Time and Again, marks the passage of time, while at night the lilies shimmer like starbursts. Clusters of ‘fireflies’ surround this complex arrangement. Walk through the fireflies, or cascading optical fibre forms, as they come to life at dusk, and evoke the burst of exploding fireworks.
Meanwhile, inside the galleries, you’ll discover other immersive works, like Ferryman’s Crossing I. Made from recycled CDs, this artwork creates an abstracted luminescent river with a central crossing, and is inspired by the 1992 novel, Siddhartha.
Other artworks include:
- Reflections – a series of kaleidoscopic, digital light animations
- Time and Place: Sunrise Road – a grid of changing light and colour from photographic slides
- Uluru – colourful large-scale works derived from pixelated photos taken at Uluru
The gallery will open late until 8pm, from Thursday to Saturday, so you can enjoy the immersive, outdoor experience after dark. There will also be guided tours every Friday at 6:30pm.
