Japan has announced that foreign nationals will be allowed entry into the country via means of limited package tours from June 10. Tourists will be classified as belonging to one of three coloured groups that will determine their entry requirements.
Australian tourists will be permitted entry as they form part of the low-risk blue group alongside another 97 counties. Tourists from this group are not required to quarantine or take an on-arrival test. Rather, all you need is a negative PCR test result within 72 hours of departure. (Entry requirements include each person being triple vaccinated against COVID-19.)
The trial will be planned in collaboration with travel tour agencies. As per the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website: “only when a travel agency among others organizing the trip serves as the receiving organization of the entrants.”
According to Japan Tourism Agency, six travel agencies such as the likes of Jalpack Co. and Nippon Travel Agency will take part in the project. Travellers will be required to purchase medical insurance.
Japan relies heavily on tourism, but has adopted strict border measures since the start of the pandemic in early 2020. As a result, tourists have not been able to enter Japan since, only some students and business travellers have been allowed entry despite the fall of the yen.
