Calling all Hobbits! If you’re looking for something to do in that strange time between Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve, Fed Square has the answer. Make the journey to the heart of Melbourne, and watch The Lord of the Rings Trilogy – Extended Editions on the Big Screen. The move feels pretty inspired by this viral tweet, but is also timely, as The Fellowship of the Ring will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2026.
These free screenings will run from Saturday December 27 to Monday December 29.
The Lord of the Rings trilogy at Fed Square
This legendary trilogy was filmed in one continuous shoot, and released annually on Boxing Day from 2001 to 2003. Follow Frodo, Sam, Gandalf, Aragorn and more iconic characters on their quest to destroy the One Ring and save Middle-earth from the forces of darkness. Whether you’re a passionate fan or a curious newcomer, you’ll have an epic time under the stars at these free screenings.
Fed Square will showcase the full extended cuts, so you can spend more time lost in this fantasy world. Don’t worry, there will be a 15-minute intermission each night. All of the films will also have closed-captions.

If you’re feeling hungry, the themed food truck Bilbo Snaggins will have their grilled gourmet hot dogs on offer. ACMI’s snack bar will also be open, so you can enjoy choc tops, popcorn, drinks and other movie treats.
