Forget yoga, meditation and woosah to release pent up frustration because you can pick up an axe at Lumber Punks, visualise your target and unleash the fury one throw at a time. Whoosh and thwack goes the wood and our worries.
Admittedly, there is a certain knack to successful axe-throwing. You need to impart just the right amount of spin so that the blade strikes the bullseye first, which does require a fair bit of trial and error.
Fortunately, the team at Lumber Punks are no slouches when it comes to hurling hatchets. They’ve got real axeperience nailing their targets and they’ll be on hand to help you spin the primaeval tool. Soon, you too will be hitting your target 100% of the time—hopefully.
Each axe-throwing session begins with a brief safety induction and training on how to best throw the SOG Tomahawks before you get to have a go yourself. After much experimentation, you’ll hopefully start to get the hang of things and then you’ll move on up to the large Estwing Camp Axes.
In the latter half of the 90-minute sessions, you’ll be playing some axe-throwing games to decide who is the most skilful axe-wielder of all. It’s like darts or bowling, sort of.
There are a few other things to bear in mind: closed-toed shoes must be worn so don’t be turning up in thongs or sandals. There’s also no booze (or drugs) allowed, for obvious reasons, and no, you cannot rock up after a few pints either.
If you do want to drink afterwards, just ask the staff. They’ve got a bunch of bar and brewery partners where you’ll be able to kick on after your session.
To throw, hurl and toss axes you’ll need to be over 18 years of age or if you’re between the ages of 14-17, be with your legal guardian. You’ll need to sign a waiver too, but that’s expected when handling sharp objects.
Lumber Punks is open all week long and sessions cost $45 per person.
