Former icon of Melbourne’s skyline, Eureka Skydeck, has transformed and risen to new heights as Melbourne Skydeck. After a multi-million dollar redevelopment, Melbourne Skydeck has launched with some exciting new attractions. Head up to the highest observation platform in the Southern Hemisphere, take in views from above and try some awesome new immersive experiences. Are you ready to rediscover Melbourne Skydeck?
Melbourne Skydeck
This iconic attraction reopened to the public last week, and their new experiences dive into what makes Melbourne so special.
“We really believe we’ve encapsulated Melbourne in a nutshell,” said Mark Shaw, General Manager. “We’ve taken everything we love about our city, all of the great stories and facts and showcased it in an innovative and exciting way that everyone from kids to grandparents will love.”
“We drew on Melbourne’s best designers, VR specialists, academics, historians, story tellers and musicians, and of course, one of our best chefs, to create a series of incredible immersive experiences that are as thrilling and surprising as they are fascinating and informative,” he added.
So, what can you expect from the new Melbourne Skydeck?
Virtual Reality Voyager Theatre
This virtual reality experience is the largest of its kind in the world, and the first in the Souther Hemisphere. Sit on one of 24 Positron Voyager Virtual Reality chairs, and go on an 11 minute journey through 16 quintessential Melbourne and Victorian experiences.
In never-before-seen perspectives, you’ll go on a 360-degree voyage through laneways, festivals, sporting events and Victorian scenery. Feel like you’re really there with Super 8k high definition, and be immersed with sound, scent and movement. Ride the rollercoaster at Luna Park, smell coffee in Melbourne’s laneways, and feel the air on your face as you swoop over the Great Ocean Road.
As you sit on the plush Positron Voyager chair, you’ll be accompanied by a bespoke soundtrack from local music legends Felix Riebl and Ollie McGill of The Cat Empire.
Augmented Reality 3D Melbourne Model
Take an incredibly detailed look at Melbourne across eight periods of its development. On a 1:1100 3D scale model, you’ll explore Melbourne from pre-settlement through to the future. This detailed model was based on the work by Monash University architecture professor Dr Tom Morgan. It took four printers 240 days to create the 184 pieces of the model. 40 3D augmented reality models were created to overlay the installation.
After that, use the Melbourne Skydeck app to embark on a virtual treasure hunt. Find all 31 hidden markers, and claim a Melbourne Skydeck gift when you leave.
Bar 88
End your adventure with a drink at Bar 88. Operated by the Eureka 89 fine dining team, you’ll have access to a range of champagnes, wines, beers, spirits, cocktails and soft drinks. Take in the 360-degree views on window-ledge seating, and then snack on the bar menu designed by award-winning executive chef Renee Martillano.
On top of the new attractions, there will still be familiar favourites. See if the skyline has changed after lockdown, and take in stunning views on the observation deck. Then, try The Edge, a transparent cube suspended almost 300 metres above the ground. After that, try The Plank, a virtual reality experience that ends with a thrilling plunge and zipline ride.
