From Sunday, August 23, over 400 extra weekly train services will run across the Melbourne network. For the first time, trains will run directly between Newport and Sandringham via Flinders Street, so you won’t have to change a train on your way to the western or bayside suburbs. The new timetable goes live today on Friday, August 7.
More train services in Melbourne
The Werribee, Laverton, Williamstown and Sandringham lines will get over 180 extra weekly services. On weekdays, trains will run every 10 minutes between Newport and Sandringham.
The new cross-city service will run from Newport and Laverton to Sandringham during the morning peak, and only from Newport during the evening peak. In off-peak hours, it will run from Werribee, Laverton and Williamstown. Meanwhile, trains from Sandringham will run during peak hours to either Newport, Williamstown or Laverton, with off-peak trains travelling to Werribee.
Here’s what else has changed:
- Craigieburn line – an extra 115 services a week, with trains over 20 minutes or less from morning until midnight.
- Belgrave and Lilydale lines – extra Friday and Saturday night services to Ringwood.
- Mernda and Hurstbridge lines – 8 extra Sunday morning services on each line.
- Wyndham Vale line – more peak services will be upgraded to nine-car VLocity trains, increasing capacity by 50 per cent.
- Geelong line – 40 services extended from Geelong to Waurn Ponds each week.
- Shepparton line – nine return services every weekday and five return services on weekends after the Shepparton line upgrade
- Seymour line – trains every hour on weekends.
On Sunday, September 13, the new West Tarneit Station will open in Melbourne’s west.
Next year, there will also be even more services for the Hurstbridge, Mernda, Belgrave, Lilydale, Alamein and Glen Waverley lines.
