Walks around town
If you’re an experienced hiker, try out the Staircase Spur trail, a 16km trek that will take you to the summit of Mount Bogong, Victoria’s highest peak at 1986 metres. Journey from the Mountain Creek Picnic Area just outside of Mount Beauty, through a forest of peppermint and snow gums and up to the summit. About halfway through the climb, you’ll find Bivouac Hut, which will offer a place to rest. This hike takes about 10 hours to complete.
For something more beginner-friendly, try the Mount Beauty Gorge Walk. This trail is 2.8km long, and takes about 90 minutes to complete. Amble your way from the Big Hill Mountain Bike Park towards Falls Creek. As you make your way uphill, you’ll eventually come across a swing bridge over the West Kiewa River. Cross the bridge and continue uphill, and encounter a swimming hole and take in great views of the Gorge. During summer, it’s also possible to walk, wade and swim upstream to a canyon. No bushwalking experience is needed for this walk.

For something even easier, go for a stroll to see Fainter Falls. From the carpark on Bogong High Plains Road, you’ll make the 1.4km return journey along the creek to see the stunning waterfall.
