Victoria has claimed the crown for Australia’s best gelato, with Melbourne-based Oh My Gelato! taking out the top prize at the inaugural Australian Gelato Cup.
The winning team, May Quah and Apple Robles, impressed judges with The Melbourne Marvel—a decadent combination of Australian pistachio, espresso variegato and dark chocolate-coated honeycomb.
The judges announced the winner yesterday at Fine Food Australia, where six finalists spent the week at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre scooping, sharing and showcasing their creations for the national title.
A gelato worthy of its name

Oh My Gelato!’s winning flavour brings together some distinctly Australian ingredients with a very Melbourne hit of caffeine. Australian pistachio meets espresso variegato, finished with dark chocolate-coated honeycomb in a flavour the judges ultimately deemed the country’s best.
Also, the win now sends Quah and Robles from Victoria to Italy in November, where they’ll represent Australia at the Sherbeth International Artisan Gelato Festival and take on gelato makers from around the world for the chance to be named the best in the world.
The national competition also handed out two other awards. People’s Choice went to Paola Guarin Sanchez of Merry Pops in New South Wales for El Amor de Mi Visa, combining macadamia gelato, dulce de leche, Colombian mango and macadamia crunch.
Meanwhile, Andrea Calabrese of La Viennese in South Australia took out Critic’s Choice with Scent of Home—a savoury-leaning creation pairing avocado and Tahitian lime with an extra virgin olive oil ripple.
Melbourne takes centre stage

The inaugural Australian Gelato Cup formed part of this year’s Fine Food Australia, the country’s longest-running food industry event.
Held at MCEC, the event brings together more than 900 exhibitors, from local producers to international brands, to showcase the latest and greatest from Australia’s foodservice and hospitality industry.
For Oh My Gelato!, though, the biggest scoop of the week belongs to Victoria, with the next stop waiting for them in Italy!
