In 2019, the world was captivated by Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite. This gripping tale about social class and inequality went on to win the Canes Palme d’Or, and it became the first non-English language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. See it for yourself, and hear the soundtrack performed live for the first time in Australia by its composer Jung Jae-il. Jung will lead Orchestra Victoria from the piano in two special performances at Hamer Hall, as part of the Melbourne International Film Festival. See Parasite Live in Concert at either 2pm or 8pm on Saturday August 23.
Parasite Live In Concert
This Melbourne-exclusive concert will be Jung’s first performance in Australia. Listen to the score live as the film unfolds on screen. Jung’s score is equal parts chamber music, baroque pastiche and minimalist unease. Feel the tension surface as the story and the score unfold, and view the Kim’s infiltration of the Park family household as an inevitability. The film will be projected in its original Korean language version, with English subtitles.
“Composing the score of Parasite for Director Bong Joon Ho was a life changing experience for me, and it’s a work I’m incredible proud of,” said Jung. “I’m so excited to conduct and perform this original score Live in Concert for the first time in Australia with the talented Orchestra Victoria as part of Melbourne International Film Festival.”
Since Parasite, Jung has composed for Netflix’s Squid Game, scored for Bong’s latest film, Mickey 17, and collaborated on Twinless from James Sweeney, which will also screen at MIFF this year.
“This isn’t just a film with live music, it’s something far more rare,” said Al Cossar, MIFF Artistic Director. “To see Jung Jae-il perform and conduct his own score, live, brings an intimacy and immediacy you can’t replicate. It’s exactly the kind of experience that belongs on a festival stage.”
