Polish Festival in Fed Square

One of the festival highlights is the Hejnał mariacki, or St. Mary’s Trumpet Call. In Kraków, a single trumpeter plays a tune from the tower of St. Mary’s Basilica, overlooking the Main Market Square. The musician plays it every hour, on the hour, facing north, south, east and west. But, the tune stops abruptly mid-note.
Back in medieval times, the trumpet was used to signal the opening and closing of the city gates at dawn and dusk, and was also used as a warning signal. Legend says that centuries ago, a watchman spotted enemy troops approaching the city during the Mongol invasion, and sounded the trumpet as a warning. But, before he could finish, an arrow struck him, cutting the melody short. Today, this unfinished trumpet call has become one of the most recognisable traditions in Kraków.
To honour this tradition, a musician will perform the Hejnał mariacki right here in Melbourne. The trumpeter will perform at the top of Transport, overlooking the Main Stage at 1pm.
