The public holiday drought between the King’s Birthday and the Friday before AFL Grand Final is a rough one. But now, there’s some hope. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has hinted that Aussies could enjoy a one-off public holiday soon — if the Matildas win the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023. As reported by The Daily Aus, the PM has said that he will personally lobby state premiers to declare a public holiday if the Matildas take home the winning trophy.
The Prime Minister famously made a similar promise during the men’s World Cup last year, that should the Socceroos win, there would be a public holiday for Australia.
While special case public holidays are decided by State Governments, Albanese has said that “if the Matildas win the World Cup on home soil, there will be a race by premiers to declare a public holiday,” adding that “he’d be on the phone to state and territory leaders”.
Not sure about you, but we’re doubly excited to cheer on the Matildas now.
Australia got off to a flying start after defeating Ireland 1-0 at Stadium Australia. The next match for the Matildas will take place in Brisbane at Lang Park on Thursday, July 27.
