Sometimes, it’s the simple things that bring joy. The wind in your hair, the sun in your face, the thrill of your legs dangling as the Puffing Billy chugs along. If you’ve missed that nostalgic feeling, you’ll be happy to know that you can once again sit on the carriage sills at Puffing Billy. Admire rolling hills and lush green forests as your legs kick aimlessly at the air, for the first time since March 2018. Ticket bookings are available now.
Puffing Billy
For over 100 years, passengers have been able to sit on the sill of Puffing Billy’s open-side carriages, with their legs happily hanging out.
“Parents, grandparents, friends, and families with fond memories of sitting on the sills now have the chance to experience it again with a whole new generation,” said Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing.
This relaunched experience will run on trains travelling from the daily Belgrave to Lakeside route.
The experience, which was cancelled in 2018 due to safety concerns, is back after operators have implemented risk management processes.
Over 11 million passengers have travelled through the Dandenong Ranges on Puffing Billy since 1900.
Prior to the pandemic, this open air steam train attracted roughly 500,000 visitors a year.
“Puffing Billy is a much-loved favourite for tourists, day-trippers and school groups, and the return of sitting on the sills will ensure more visitors come to our region to experience all we have on offer,” said Member for Monbulk James Merlino.
When sitting on the carriage sill, adult supervision is required for any child aged between 4 and 13. Children under 4 are not permitted to sit on the carriage sill.
