When you’re sharing a neighbourhood with the MCG, Rod Laver Arena, and AAMI Park, it’s admittedly a little hard to stand out from the crowd. But Punt Road Oval is about to get a leg up in that regard, with the green light given to the first phase of a grand redevelopment plan that will see the historic oval transformed. Here’s what Tigers fans and curious AFL watchers need to know!
The Punt Road Oval redevelopment is, in total, a $110 million plan to upgrade the oval in a state-of-the-art transformation. Stage 1 is the part of the plan that’s been given the go ahead by the club’s board today, which allocates $85 million of the total budget to make the biggest changes to the venue.
That will include the construction of a new Jack Dyer Stand, add a three-level underground car park to the oval, and increase the visitor capacity. The most eye-catching move is the plan to make the oval itself the same size as the neighbouring MCG, as the pitch will be realigned and reshaped. There are also plans to upgrade spectator amenities, and in one of the most impactful moves, the redevelopment will substantially improve the facilities for female athletes, mostly notably the Richmond AFLW team, who are gearing up for a new season right now.
Stage 1 is expected to be completed by mid-2027, and in the interim, the club will look to raise the remaining $25 million to proceed with Stage 2, which includes new administration offices, and the establishment of the William Cooper Centre. Richmond FC is drawing on its current cash reserves for the project, and there has also been support from donors, members, the AFL, and state and federal governments.
Richmond’s CEO, Shane Dunne, stated that the redevelopment will “make us stronger on and off the field and ensure we are set up for success for generations to come. Importantly, this redevelopment will ensure Richmond stays in Richmond, our home since 1885.” Stick 2027 in your diaries for a visit, and we’ll keep you updated with any news about the project.
