Soul-jazz powerhouse Rita Satch and ARIA-winning pianist Barney McAll join forces for a one night only in Melbourne, bringing a soulful tribute to iconic classics reimagined through a modern lens, alongside their own works. Taking place at The JazzLab, the event is called “Spirit in the Dark”, named after the seventeenth studio album by American singer Aretha Franklin. Tickets are already on sale and can be purchased here.
Rita Satch & Barney McAll – Spirit in the Dark

Named Soul Artist of the Year and Soul Album of the Year 2025 by Echoes Magazine (UK), Rita Satch is one of the best voices in jazz and soul right now. Born in Uzbekistan and raised in Melbourne, her music is a blend of soulful genres that takes you on an emotional journey. On the other hand, McAll is one of Australia’s most visionary musicians who developed his voice with Groove Collective in NYC. The Melbourne-born pianist, composer and producer has won an ARIA Award, been nominated for a GRAMMY, and collaborated with just about every modern jazz performer.
After an electrifying performance at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, the duo is looking to The JazzLab next. They worked together on Precious Energy (2022), featuring Gary Bartz, Laneous and members of Hiatus Kaiyote. But seeing these artists of this international caliber in the intimate environment of the renowned Brunswick jazz club offers a level of connection you can’t get at a major festival mainstage.
On Friday, 1 May, music fans will get to experience a touch of McAll’s “spiritual jazz” and Satch’s powerful voice as they take on classics by Marvin Gaye, Patti LaBelle, and DeBarge, as well as original works. The show starts at 8:00pm but doors open half an hour earlier so everyone can unhurriedly find their spot.
🎟️Tickets: $40.00 – $45.00
