ROME: Empire, Power, People exhibition at Melbourne Museum
This exhibition was designed by Museums Victoria, and developed in collaboration with Contemporanea Progetti and curators from Museo Nazionale Romano and Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Firenze. It will draw on the collections from these prestigious museums, and feature over 150 objects from the Imperial Period 1st Century CE to the 3rd Century CE.

Marvel at ancient statues, gorgeous pieces of jewellery, humble everyday objects and more incredible artefacts. Along with the items on display, you’ll also feel immersed with detailed scenography and multimedia of Rome.
“This exhibition offers a once-in-a-lifetime chance to stand before treasures nearly 2,000 years old and feel the pulse of a civilisation that shaped the world,” said Lynley Crosswell, CEO & Director of Museums Victoria.

Journey through Rome’s political, cultural and social life, and trace key moments from its legacy, such as the fall of Julius Caesar, the rise of the Empire and the spectacle of the gladiators. Learn about the everyday lives of Romans, and explore the luxury of Imperial Rome.
“This exhibition is the result of an exceptional collaboration between Australia and Italy,” said Federica Montani, Head of Exhibitions at Contemporanea Progetti. “Our goal was to craft an exhibition that allows visitors to step into the heart of Ancient Rome – to create an experience that reveals not only the Empire’s grandeur, but also the humanity of the people who shaped its history. Through close collaboration with our Italia museum partners and Museums Victoria, we sought to create a dynamic journey through a civilisation that continues to inspire the modern world.”
Beyond the Roman exhibition

Complementing the exhibition, and taking inspiration from Melbourne’s own Italian food scene, you can expect a themed eatery featuring local Italian suppliers on the lower ground level. Meanwhile, the museum’s Mercury Restaurant will feature a regionally diverse menu, honouring a variety of culinary traditions from across Italy. Local Italian chefs will contribute to the development of key dishes at the restaurant.
IMAX Melbourne will host special screenings of both Italian classics and contemporary films, and there will be more supporting events and programming throughout the exhibition season.
