Oh Happy Day! Did you know that the iconic Sister Act film, starring Whoopi Goldberg, has its own musical? And you can see it right here in Melbourne. Put on your habit and get ready to sing praises to this smash-hit musical comedy. After blessing Broadway, the UK and Sydney with its presence, the Sister Act musical is now dazzling audiences at the Regent Theatre in Melbourne.
Sister Act Musical
This musical comedy is based on the 1992 movie. It features original music from Tony and Oscar award-winner Alan Menken, the same composer behind Disney’s Aladdin, The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. You’ll feel uplifted with tunes inspired by Motown, soul and disco.
This divine show is all about disco diva Deloris, who witnesses a murder and is placed in protective custody. Hidden in a convent, she helps her fellow sisters find their voices in a struggling choir, and unexpectedly rediscovers her own.
The Sister Act musical was nominated for five Tony awards, including Best Musical, as well as six Olivier Awards. The creative team includes Alan Menken (Music), Glenn Slater (Lyrics), Cheri and Bill Steinkellner (Book), Bill Buckhurst (Director) and Alistair David (Choreographer).
Melbourne review
If your spirits need lifting, the Sister Act musical is just what you need. From the moment the curtain opens, you’ll laugh as you listen to a gaggle of nuns trying, and failing, to sing hymns. From there, the fun continues to unfold, and although there are some dark moments, like the murder witnessed by Deloris, the show continues to stay upbeat, and even the villainous gangsters don’t seem too scary when they’re singing and dancing in their ’70s suits.
Casey Donovan brings the energy as Deloris Van Cartier, and her bubbly and confident presence is complemented by the more stern (yet still funny!) Genevieve Lemon as Mother Superior. Rhonda Burchmore’s vocals made Sister Mary Lazarus an absolute hoot. Meanwhile, Raphael Wong was utterly endearing as the awkward ‘Steady’ Eddie, and there was one particular costume moment that totally won the crowd over.
Speaking of costumes, you’ll find more than habits in this particular musical. Feel whisked away to 1970s Philadelphia with a riot of colour and sequins. The set design was also great, with disco balls, stained glass windows and more.
All in all, Sister Act is an easy watch if you’re looking for a fabulous night out.
