Keen to dig your toes in powdery white sand surrounded by the most turquoise-blue waters this summer? You don’t have to go too far. Perched on the western side of Wilsons Promontory National Park in Victoria is the famous Squeaky Beach, and it’s a lot more than just a scenic coastline. The idyllic spot with its sugary white sands, crashing waves, and incredible views is widely touted as one of the prettiest beaches in Victoria (and even the world) and home to some of the whitest sands in Australia. True to its name, the beach is famed for its rounded quartz sand, which quite literally ‘squeaks’ when you walk on it, an exceptional natural wonder not too far from Melbourne and an essential coastal getaway this summer. Here’s everything you need to know about Squeaky Beach.
Squeaky Beach, Wilsons Promontory National Park

Enveloped by striking granite boulders, rolling sand dunes, and coastal bushland, Squeaky Beach is a popular destination for beach lovers across Victoria and a great base for whale watching at the national park during migration season. The sand itself is strikingly white, creating a postcard-perfect stretch that rivals even Hyams Beach or WA’s shores. The pristine white sand has remained this way thanks to the abundance of quartz found in the area. Over time, natural forces have rounded the quartz crystals, and as you walk, they produce that signature squeak, making it a delightful summer escape for visitors of all ages.
The beach is incredibly popular in spring and summer, so expect crowds to descend in droves over the next few months. If you’re determined to have it to yourself, try to arrive early in the day; you might just find some pockets of seclusion if you’re lucky. However, be aware that swimming is not permitted due to dangerous rips and strong currents, and the beach is not patrolled, though it remains a well-known surf spot within The Prom.
