The wonderful winter arts festival, RISING, is coming back to Melbourne from Wednesday June 4 to Sunday June 15. And we now know a bit of what to expect with the reveal of an exciting new commission. Head up to the Flinders Street Station Ballroom and check out Swingers: The Art of Mini Golf. This playable art exhibition will feature nine imaginative mini-golf holes from female-identifying artists. This fun experience will open on Wednesday June 4 and run until Sunday August 31.
Swingers: The Art of Mini Golf
This adventurous mini-golf experience will feature all sorts of surprises. “Alongside playing mini-golf and experiencing the artworks, you might have your fortune told, travel to a desert country, become a human-animal hybrid, or even find yourself singing along to Dolly Parton,” said RISING Senior Curator Grace Herbert.
The game of mini-golf was originally dreamt up by 19th century Scottish women, who were banned from the ‘real’ golf courses. Herbert drew on the games radical femme roots to develop this project, and reached out to artists from Australia and overseas.
Acclaimed filmmaker, writer and artist Miranda July (USA) will go ‘all fores’ on the course, following the release of her novel All Fours last year. Kaylene Whiskey (Australia) will tee up a mixture of pop culture with Anangu traditions, and Saeborg (Japan) will showcase a world of latex creatures. See playful and experimental sculptures from Nabilah Nordin (Australia) and find politically charged sculptures and intricate embroidery from Delaine LeBas (UK). Finally, Natasha Tontey (Indonesia) will feature mythology, technology and alternative histories.
The full program for RISING will be announced in March.
