Back for the first time since 2015, this six-time Tony Award-winning musical has dazzled audiences over the years, thanks to its iconic story, stunning visuals and unforgettable music. See Simba, Nala, Mufasa, Scar, Rafiki, Timon, Pumbaa and more, brought to life on stage. The Lion King musical will play at the Regent Theatre from Thursday, March 25 in 2027. Follow the young lion, Simba, and his journey to become king after the vicious scheming of his uncle, Scar. Based on Disney’s animated film, The Lion King, this grand musical is approaching 30 years on Broadway. Since it debuted in November 1997, this show has been seen by over 127 million people, and has been performed in nine different languages. It has played in over 100 cities, in over 24 countries on every continent except Antarctica. The production is currently playing to sold-out theatres in Sydney, and will go on to perform in Brisbane before making its way to Melbourne.
This production features a number of alumni, including Buyi Zama playing the role of Rafiki for the third time, and Nick Afoa as Mufasa, who made his theatre debut twelve years ago as Simba. The show also features Aphiwe Nyezi as Simba, Emily Nkomo as Nala, Daniel Frederiksen as Scar, Benn Welford as Zazu, Jamie McGregor as Timon and Rutene Spooner as Pumbaa. Rounding out the principal cast is Ezra Williams as Shenzi, Winston Hillver as Banzai and Mat Verevis as Ed.
The Broadway score features Elton John and Tim Rice’s beloved tunes from the animated film, as well as three new songs from the pair, additional music from Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Julie Taymor and Hans Zimmer, and music from Rhythm of the Pride Lands, an album inspired by the film’s original music. Expect a blend of Western popular music and the rhythms of Africa, with beloved tunes like the Academy Award-winning song, Can You Feel The Love Tonight.
The Lion King won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design, Best Choreography and Best Direction of a Musical. It also won a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album.
After national tours of Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Mary Poppins and Frozen, this is the ninth Disney Theatrical Group production to tour the country over the past 30 years.
