Arts festival RISING is returning to Melbourne this June. And although the full program hasn’t been released, they’ve released the details of one exciting show that will be a part of the program. See The Picture of Dorian Gray, a stunning tale brought to life by Sydney Theatre Company and presented by Michael Cassel Group. This production will run at the Playhouse in Arts Centre Melbourne, from Sunday June 5 to Sunday July 17.
The Picture of Dorian Gray
This powerful adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s classic tale is a one-person show. See actor Eryn Jean Norvill transform and play all 26 characters in a masterful feat of storytelling. The production mixes contemporary theatre design, lush period drama and live video to create a feast for the senses.
Oscar Wilde’s novel explores a world that is obsessed with youth and beauty. Through the use of cinema and live performance, this adaptation breathes new life into the tale, and holds a mirror to our own modern obsessions.
This performance was written and directed by STC Artistic Director Kip Williams. It premiered in Sydney in 2020, played to sold-out crowds, and had an encore season in 2022.
“I am thrilled out production of The Picture of Dorian Gray is coming to Arts Centre Melbourne as part of RISING,” said Williams. “I am immensely proud of this production, and am in awe of Eryn Jean’s spectacular performance that sits at its centre, as well as the extraordinary work of our team of remarkable artists and technicians.”
“At RISING we tell stories about who and where we are right now, and oddly, there is none more relevant than this 19th century gothic masterpiece,” said Gideon Obarzanek, RISING co-artistic director. “This is one of the most extraordinary productions I have seen anywhere in the world.”
