Keen for a nostalgic weekend getaway or a lovely day trip? If you’re looking for a charming small town that’s packed with history, why don’t you visit the gold rush town of Maldon? Located less than two hours away from Melbourne, Maldon was declared as Australia’s first ever ‘Notable Town’ by the National Trust in 1965, due to its remarkable preservation of gold rush architecture. Take a stroll along the heritage streetscapes, and feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Then, pop into one of the quirky shops, warm up with some delicious food or continue your journey through history on a steam train.

Maldon
Located on the lands of the Dja Dja Wurrung People, the town of Maldon was established in 1853 during the gold rush. In 2006, the National Trust also declared Maldon to have the ‘most intact heritage streetscape’, and as you amble along the picturesque main street, you’ll see why! Marvel at well-preserved architecture and Victorian-era buildings, such as the railway station, the old post office and the bakery. Dive even deeper into the town’s history with a visit to the local museum.
When you’re not admiring the verandah-lined shopfronts, head out of town to check out its mining history, such as the 30-metre-tall Beehive Mine Chimney. There’s a few walks you can do around the historic reserve, which will take you to see old mining sites. Just be sure to keep to the path, as there are plenty of old mine shafts and tunnels around the region.

Drive up to the Mt Tarrengower Lookout Tower for panoramic views of the town and surrounding landscape. Built in 1923, you can climb up the first two levels and soak in the sights. There are walking tracks in the area, as well as picnic tables.
For even more views, check out Rock of Ages. Located on Mount Mooral, this rocky outcrop overlooks the town. Swing by during sunrise or sunset for a breathtaking sight. Pack a picnic to enjoy by the enormous boulders.

If you love trains, there is a heritage steam train that runs between Castlemaine and Maldon. Hop aboard one of the locomotives from Victorian Goldfields Railway, and journey through the countryside. For a bit of extra elegance, upgrade your experience to a First Class seat for access to the fully stocked bar.
