Tasmania is getting a fresh wave of attention from the mainland, with Virgin Australia and Tourism Tasmania teaming up on a limited-time fare sale that cuts the cost of a winter or spring escape.
For Melbourne travellers, the timing is hard to ignore, with one-way fares to Hobart start from $95, while Launceston flights are available from $69. The sale runs until 17th May, or until tickets sell out, for select travel dates between 15th July 2026 and 24th March 2027.
The discounted routes cover Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, giving travellers a chance to lock in a Tassie break well ahead of time. Other standout fares include Sydney to Launceston from $79, Sydney to Hobart from $85, Adelaide to Hobart from $95, Brisbane to Launceston from $115 and Perth to Hobart from $289.

Why head to Tassie now?

The lower fares make it easier to turn a weekend away into a proper island escape. Hobart offers a compact city break with food, bars and heritage charm, while Launceston puts you closer to the north’s wineries, the Cataract Gorge and easy access to regional road trips.
The sale lands as Tourism Tasmania continues its 2026 Off Season push, a campaign designed to encourage travel during the quieter months of May to August and position winter as part of the attraction rather than a reason to stay away.
The official campaign invites visitors to “become a winter person,” with more than 500 offers and experiences created across the state to tempt travellers into cooler-weather bookings.
Winter can mean crisp blue-sky days, dramatic scenery and snow up top, while spring and summer bring wildflowers, seasonal produce and long daylight hours for exploring.
Snow, grub and road trips

If you do go in the colder months, Ben Lomond Alpine Resort is one of the state’s best-known winter draws. The resort says its snowmaking setup helps provide snow throughout the season, which runs from mid-June to September. It’s a highlight for travellers who want more than just a city break and are happy to build a trip around the slopes.
Elsewhere, Tasmania’s appeal stays broad, with tons of whisky distilleries, coastal walks, national parks and the kind of food-and-wine stops that make even a quick trip feel wholesome. For mainland travellers, this bargain is an easy excuse to go sooner rather than later.
