Thousands of glowing lanterns are set to light up Moonee Ponds this weekend as the Water Lantern Festival returns to Melbourne, transforming Queens Park into a sea of flickering reflections and quiet reflection.
What started in the U.S has now become a worldwide phenomenon, with the Water Lantern Festival running across North America, the UK, Canada, Brazil, Argentina and beyond.
A Slower Kind of Saturday (& Sunday)

Taking place across two evenings on Saturday, 2nd May and Sunday, 3rd May, the festival invites locals to slow down, gather by the water, and take part in a collective moment of calm—something that feels increasingly rare in the city’s usual pace.
Gates open at 2:30pm, with the afternoon leaning more towards a laid-back community hangout than a formal event. At the event, you will find food trucks, live music and plenty of space to spread out with a picnic rug while the park gradually fills.
Vendors like Twistabro’s, Colombiantojos and Taste of Greece Street Food will be on hand, giving the event an easy-going, street-festival energy before things turn more reflective later in the day.
Once The Lanterns Take Over

As the afternoon fades, the tone shifts. From around 4:15pm, organisers guide attendees through lantern decorating, storytelling and a short meditation session—a moment designed to encourage people to pause and think about what they want to let go of, hold onto or hope for.
By 4:45pm, the main event begins. Participants place lanterns onto the water one by one, each carrying handwritten messages, drawings or whispered intentions. As dusk settles, the lake fills with soft, glowing light—a visual that has helped the festival grow into a global phenomenon, now held in more than 175 cities worldwide with millions of lanterns launched.
While the experience leans heavily into emotion and atmosphere, there’s also a practical focus on sustainability. Organisers construct the lanterns from wood and biodegradable paper, and they conduct a full clean-up after the event, retrieving lanterns and any debris from the water.
Live performances will run across both evenings, with artists including Nick Anderson and AMES on Saturday, and Steven Reinhardt on Sunday, adding a subtle soundtrack to the unfolding scene.

With winter approaching, remember to bring a picnic blanket or lawn chair, sunscreen, bug spray and more weather-appropriate clothing. Also, getting there is easy—public transport or walking is recommended.
With Melbourne’s autumn evenings providing the perfect backdrop—crisp air, early sunsets and golden light—the festival taps into something both communal and deeply personal. It’s just as much about the spectacle as it is about the shared act of pausing, reflecting and letting go.
