Melbourne is a city of coffee lovers, and it’s no surprise to us that we’ve been named on the inaugural list for The World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops. The results were announced at Coffee Fest in Madrid earlier this week, and the top spot was taken out by Toby’s Estate, which has a flagship cafe in Fitzroy. Also spotted in the top 10 was Collingwood’s Proud Mary Coffee, which was ranked in 4th place.
The World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops
This new list celebrates the best coffee shops around the world. To figure out the cream of the crop, the list used a number of criteria, including barista expertise, coffee quality, customer service, innovation, ambiance, sustainability practices, consistency and the quality of food and pastry served in the shop.
Coffee enthusiasts from the public were welcome to vote online, and a panel of experts were used to evaluate the votes, leading to the final results.

Here are the top 10:
- Toby’s Estate Coffee Roasters, Australia
- Onyx Coffee LAB, Arkansas, USA
- Gota Coffee Experts, Vienna, Austria
- Proud Mary Coffee, Melbourne
- Tim Wendelboe, Oslo, Norway
- Apartment Coffee, Singapore
- Kawa, Paris, France
- Coffee Anthology, Brisbane
- Story of Ono, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia
- Tropicalia Coffee, Bogota, Colombia
Also on the list from Melbourne was Veneziano Coffee Roasters (19), Calēre Coffee (28), Vacation Coffee (71) and Seven Seeds (87).
Toby’s Estate, which has cafes in Sydney and Brisbane, recently opened their Melbourne flagship earlier this year.
Meanwhile, other Australian coffee shops included Exchange Coffee from Adelaide at number 37 and Fonzie Abbott from Brisbane at number 70.
