Yesterday morning, a new train station opened in Melbourne. Located near the corner of Leakes and Davis roads, West Tarneit Station is the first new station added to Victoria’s rail network since the launch of the Metro Tunnel. The station was made to support Melbourne’s booming western suburbs, and can be found between Wyndham Vale and Tarneit stations. It will be served by 689 V/Line trains each week on the Geelong line.

West Tarneit Station
The new station has two platforms, which can be accessed via stairs or ramp. The north side of the station can be reached by a 6-metre-wide pedestrian underpass. It also has 400 car spaces, a 4-bay bus interchange, a 26-space Parkiteer for bikes and 30 bicycle hoops. However, West Tarneit does not have facilities like a staffed ticket counter or toilets.
The platforms are long enough for the 9-car V/Locity trains, which boost capacity by 50% on peak services. Additional 9-car trains were recently added to the Wyndham Vale line to assist the morning and evening rush.

The new train station has also led to improvements on the local bus network. There’s a new Route 186 bus, which will run daily services between Tarneit Station and West Tarneit Station via Dohertys Road. Meanwhile, the existing Route 182 bus from Tarneit to Werribee stations will run more frequently, and stop by the new West Tarneit Station along the way. Both of these routes will run daily, up to every 15 minutes during weekday peak times, every 20 minutes across most of the day, and every 40 minutes at night.
Over the coming months, workers will continue to do landscaping around the precinct, planting over 65,000 native trees, plants and grasses, alongside new seating, and separated walking and cycling paths.
Buses, cars, pedestrians and cyclists can access the station via Leakes Road. Pedestrians can also visit the station via paths on Modern Crescent and Ceremony Drive.
