Meet and play with an assortment of curious characters born from code at the world premiere ACMI exhibition, Beings. Created by the international art and design collective, Universal Everything, this exhibition features 13 artworks made with ever-evolving algorithms. Move, dance and play with these creatures on screen, and enjoy a different experience each time. The Beings exhibition will take over ACMI from May 22 to October 6.

See the creatures come to life on large-scale screens and admire projected artworks that experiment with movement, emotion and colour. Universal Everything first began in 2004, and they produce digital artworks that subvert cinematic CBG, physics simulators and real-time gaming graphics to create new forms of moving image.
The collective has exhibited their works around the world, including Seoul, New York and London. In this curated exhibition, you’ll see 13 of their distinctive creations over their 20-year-long career, including four brand new artworks.
“I relish this opportunity to push our studio practice even further, with some never-before-seen artworks created for Melbourne audiences,” said Matt Pyke, Universal Everything Founder. “As ever, I’m looking forward to being surprised by unexpected visitor responses to the show.”
The generative installations will grow and change in real-time, and respond differently to each visitor.
At this exhibition, you’ll also learn about the creative process and the innovative technology behind the artworks. Hand-drawn sketches will be on display for the first time.
There will also be plenty of fun programs to complement the exhibition, including late nights at ACMI, a contemporary dance series featuring Melbourne choreographers, school holiday activities and interactive sessions for children aged three to five.
In the meantime, their current exhibition, Marshmallow Laser Feast: Works of Nature, is on display until April 14.
