Victoria is full of lush forests, and if you’re keen to stretch your legs and go for a walk, there’s one particular route in the Yarra Valley that offers incredible views of one of the largest trees in Victoria. Take a stroll through a cool and temperate rainforest, and gaze up at the magnificent Ada Tree. This towering mountain ash is estimated to be over 300 years old and stands at 76 metres tall. With a circumference of 15 metres, this giant is one of the largest flowering eucalypts in the world. The Ada Tree is nestled deep in the Yarra State Forest, and is close to Warburton, Powelltown and Noojee. The Ada Tree Walk is roughly two and a half hours away from Melbourne.
Ada Tree Walk
Your forest adventure begins with a scenic drive along a lengthy gravel road. This road is suitable for vehicles for most of the year, but if there’s rain or snow, you’ll need to be extra carful. Park your car at the Ada Tree Walk Car Park, and take a moment to pause and enjoy a bite to eat at one of the picnic tables nearby. Then, head off on the rainforest walk to see the Ada Tree.
The walk itself is a loop, and the trail is 3.6km long. It takes about 1.5 hours to complete, and while the surface of the track is generally, there are some uneven steps to be mindful of.
As you meander through the forest, breathe in the cool air and admire the surrounding myrtle beech, sassafras and tree ferns. Listen out for singing lyrebirds or for the flow of the nearby creek. Make your way deeper into the forest, past verdant gullies, and eventually, you’ll reach a viewing platform that overlooks the majestic Ada Tree.
After admiring this gigantic mountain ash, continue on the loop back to your car.
The car park area does have toilets, and as this is in a state forest, you’re welcome to bring your dog along the walk with you. Please remember to take your rubbish with you. As you are in nature, you will need to plan ahead and check the forecast for any tricky conditions like fire or rain.
