It’s spring time, which means it’s the perfect season to lose yourself in some beautiful, colourful flowers. If you’re done admiring all the gorgeous cherry blossoms around Melbourne, and you’re still hungry for more stunning flowers, why don’t you pop over to Alowyn Gardens in Yarra Glen? There, you’ll find a breath-taking wisteria archway. Walk underneath this purple canopy, and admire the spectacular blooms. The archway looks amazing all year round, but is particularly magnificent for four weeks in spring. The wisteria usually looks its best during mid-October, but due to the weather we’ve been having lately, the walkway has begun to bloom.
Alowyn Gardens
Venture out into the Yarra Valley, and wander through these gorgeous gardens this spring. Stretching out over seven acres, you’ll find nine key gardens in which to lose yourself. From a French Provincial Garden with lavender to a Birch & Casuarina Forest area, there’s plenty of things to discover at Alowyn Gardens.
Connecting them all is the wisteria archway. Stretching out over 100 metres, this freestanding timber and steel structure acts as a central spine for the location. It features radiant Japanese wisteria, which provides plenty of cool shade in the summer. During autumn, this wisteria tunnel is awash with hues of gold. But for a few precious weeks in October, it blooms into an utterly dreamy curtain of purple.
After taking photos and wandering underneath the archway, explore the rest of the gardens and admire the other seasonal plants. Pop into the nursery for something to take home. Then, enjoy a muffin and a cup of coffee in the café courtyard.
Roughly an hour’s drive away from Melbourne, a visit to these gardens would make for a lovely day trip. It’s open seven days a week, from 10am to 5pm. It costs just $15 for adults to enter, and kids under 12 are free.
Keep an eye on their Instagram for updates and the best time to visit the wisteria this year.
