Winter is well and truly underway and if you can’t wait for snowy adventures, we’ve got some good news for you. The Southern Hemisphere’s first-ever Alpine Coaster in Thredo, a project over eight years in the making has finally opened. The popular village and ski resort has a lot to offer to the hordes of holidaying Melburnians and Sydneysiders who flock there every year when the weather gets frosty. In 2024, thrill seekers have yet another reason to head down to the Snowy Mountains and traverse the alpine environment on the exciting Alpine Coaster.
Alpine Coaster in Thredbo, NSW
Home to Australia’s longest ski runs and excellent mountain bike and hiking trails, Thredbo’s latest offering is a year-round, all-weather attraction. The Alpine Coaster features 40 carts, and passengers will have the option to control their speed of up to 40km/h and a maximum acceleration of 19.6km per second. The 1.5 kilometre coaster has a thrilling mix of uphill and downhill tracks, featuring a tunnel, bridges and circles.
Passengers must be 8 years or older, and over 135cm tall, to ride the Alpine Coaster on their own. Children aged 3 to 8 can go on the ride with a person over the age of 15.
Located in the heart of Kosciuszko National Park, Thredbo is packed with winter activities including skiing and snowboarding. It is also home to a charming winter village and a leisure centre that has an indoor heated Olympic pool, waterslide, bouldering wall, gym and squash court.
Construction started late last year with the attraction opening its doors earlier this month. The journey to Thredbo from Melbourne is around 6.5 to 7 hours drive, but the new Alpine Coaster will certainly be worth the trip. Find more information on Thredbo’s official website.
