Grabbing a hot jam doughnut from American Doughnut Kitchen is like a core memory for any Melburnian. This beloved institution has served up their sweet, oozy doughnuts from a vintage van at Queen Vic Market since 1950. And now, after decades of doughnuts and months of anticipation, they’re finally opening their first brick-and-mortar shop. American Doughnut Kitchen will open at Prahran Market on Saturday July 6. To celebrate, they’re giving away 200 free doughnuts and 200 free puppuccinos to the first 200 shoppers on Saturday from 9am.

Inspired by the iconic van, the store will pay homage to the original location with a rounded front counter, which will make it look like a van is parked in the shop. You’ll also see other familiar nods, like the iconic blue and white stripes, and a wall full of historic pictures detailing their doughnut legacy. With the open workstation, you’ll watch the team cut, cook and fill your doughnuts with classic rasperry plum jam, before tossing it in sugar.
For the first time, you will also be able to pair your doughnuts with a cup of coffee, making it the perfect spot for a market breakfast.
“Our handmade doughnuts that we still make using the same original recipe have been a favourite among Melburnians for generations,” said American Doughnut Kitchen Managing Director Belinda Donaghey. “The opening of our Prahran Market shop represents another exciting milestone in the American Doughnut Kitchen legacy. We look forward to serving our delicious doughnuts to new and existing Southside customers for years to come.”
The Prahran Market location will open on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 7am to 5pm. It will also open on Sunday from 8am to 3pm.
