We love a good road trip. Whether you’re in search of charming towns, scenic views or otherworldly places, there’s lots of exciting spots to discover in our backyard. But as they say, sometimes it’s all about the journey, not the destination. And one place that truly captures that is the spectacular Black Spur Drive. This beautiful stretch of road connects the Yarra Valley with the mountain areas around Marysville. Along the way, you’ll weave through lush forests, past fern gullies and see stunning valley views. The Black Spur Drive starts on the eastern side of Healesville, just over an hour away from Melbourne.
Black Spur Drive
The winding Black Spur Drive is a picturesque section of the Maroonda Highway. Roughly 28km long, it will take you from the Yarra Ranges up towards the town of Narbethong. Roll down the windows for some crisp mountain air, and admire the dappled sunlight filtering though towering mountain ash trees.
Take your time to explore the area by stopping at some scenic spots. At the base of the drive, you’ll find the Fernshaw Picnic Area. Rest up, have a picnic, take a bathroom break, then stretch your legs on a nearby walking track.
Continue on the drive into the magical forest, where you’ll experience some twists and turns. You’ll find walking trails and picnic spots, including the Dom Dom Saddle Picnic Area. Admire the canopy above and the lush ferns below. If you’re lucky, you might see some native wildlife, like lyrebirds, kangaroos, parrots and wallabies.
Keen to truly immerse yourself in the forest? There are a few accommodation options near the Black Spur Drive, including the tranquil Woodlands Rainforest Retreat.
Otherwise, complete the journey towards Narbethong, and keep going on towards Marysville in the High Country. Near Marysville, you’ll find even more outdoor adventures, like waterfalls, lookout points and Lake Mountain Alpine Resort.
With its proximity to Melbourne, the Black Spur Drive is a great idea for a day trip. Once you’ve reached Narbethong, turn around and take in the sights all over again before making the journey home.
Keep an eye on the Parks Victoria website for any updates and look out for road closures here.
